City Council votes on paid sick and safe leave Monday, January 11, 2016

The Spokane City Council plans to hear comment and vote on Ordinance C35300 regarding Earned Sick and Safe Leave on Monday, January 11 during their 6 pm session.

This mandatory change in how Spokane city employers handle sick time for their employees has been in the works since this summer but has not been in the spotlight recently. To refresh your memory, this legislation will require employers to provide paid earned sick and safe leave. The new code will make suspending, disciplining, transferring, demoting, or discharging an employee for taking sick time for themselves or to tend to children who are ill, a violation of City code. Employers will be required to provide sick leave at a rate of one hour of leave for every thirty hours worked beginning with the first day of employment. Employers will also be required to maintain a record of both earned and used sick leave that will be provided to the employee once a quarter and upon the employees’ request. Employers will need to show compliance with the ordinance when renewing their business registration or applying for a new registration. To get full details on the ordinance, please review the draft ordinance from December 2015.

Anyone wishing to voice their opinions or concerns is welcome and encouraged to attend the City Council meeting, just sign up for public comment prior to the vote to make your views known. The vote for Ordinance C35300 will immediately follow and if passed all Spokane employers will be impacted.
